First ideas and thoughts

  • I want to look at how time can have both a positive and a negative effect - e.g. with a flower blooming and then withering and dying.
  • The middle of someone's life is probably where this transition from positive to negative comes into effect, almost like a mid-life crisis. After half way you start counting down, looking towards the end rather than the future.
  • I like the idea of freezing time and maybe showing the stages of time, almost like an evolution. Damien Hirst's work with animals in formaldehyde springs straight to mind.

The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living

I first saw the shark while down in London at the Saatchi Gallery years and years ago! It immediately stood out for me, totally frozen without the effects of time, its almost like a 3 dimensional photograph - a snapshot that will not age. It is this idea of timelessness that I want to portray in my work.
